Michelle Jung Studio is pleased to present the Emerald series. Continuing her exploration of a luminous surface from her previous Mirage series, Jung’s Emerald series includes paintings on paper and large-scale paintings, a body of work that features recurring motifs of nature in a beautiful emerald hue.
In this presentation, Jung celebrates the merging of nature with digital technology, particularly in the context of manipulating filters. Combining chiaroscuro and glazing techniques reminiscent of Renaissance painters with a monochromatic style inspired by the color field painters of the 1940s and 1950s, Jung introduces an innovative method of creating a luminal surface that becomes translucent and three-dimensional, much like the light of a computer screen. Each of the pieces is a diptych, meaning each consists of two paintings side by side. Both paintings are mirror images of one another. Where the diptych meets, a new image activates and stimulates the viewer, making the viewer cognizant of how they physiologically interact with the artwork.
In many of these works–Emerald Iris (2024), Emerald Rose Bouquet (2024), and others—rich greens seduce the viewer. Jung associates the colors’ timeless associations with royalty, wealth, and refinement. The color symbolizes life, fertility, abundance, balance, harmony, renewal, and growth. Yet, this particular tone of green has been mixed by Jung to replicate the digital media primary color (RGB) green.
