Mirage Series On View

April 9 - 30, 2024

Las Vegas

Michelle Jung Studio is pleased to present Mirage, an exhibition of 15 new paintings and works on paper by Michelle Jung. This is the artist’s first solo show in Las Vegas at her new studio/gallery space in the high elevations of the Mojave Desert.

Jung, whose work is award-winning and has been shown in museums across the country and in private collections, is known for her unique depiction of nature in various mediums with expressive, confident brushwork. Most recently, she was "Featured in the article 'Top 10 Most Creative Artists of 2024' on MSN Magazine."

Building upon her successful series, Flowers Have Feelings Too, Jung’s new paintings of flora expand into immersive large-scale abstractions. Combining techniques of chiaroscuro and glazing suggestive of Renaissance painters and a monochromatic style inspired by the color field painters of the 40s and 50s, Jung adds an innovative method of a luminal surface that becomes translucent and three-dimensional under a spotlight similar to a computer screen. Each of the 15 pieces is a diptych, which means that each piece consists of two paintings side by side. Where the diptych meets, a new image activates and stimulates the viewer, making them aware of how they interact physiologically with the artwork.

In this series, Jung asks: Has modern technology changed our view of nature, its color palette, and our need to manipulate all images with filters? Has a world viewed by computers, mobile phones, and social media forever changed our connection and relationship with nature?

As Jung continues to move her home and studio, her work evolves, exploring the passage of time, existence, and identity while challenging conventional realism.
